After winning the toss, Bangladesh was bundled out for just 106 runs in their first innings, putting them under pressure against South Africa, who took a significant lead. However, Taijul Islam’s magical bowling put some pressure on the South Africans as he took five wickets, keeping the fight alive for Bangladesh.
By the end of Day 1 of the first Test at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, South Africa had a 34-run lead, scoring 140 runs for 6 wickets in their second innings before play was halted due to poor light.
Bangladesh struck early in the first over, with Hasan Mahmud bowling out South African captain Aiden Markram. After that, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi stabilized the innings, building a crucial 41-run partnership for the second wicket.
Taijul broke this partnership, with Stubbs caught at slip off a ball that pitched outside off-stump, scoring 23 runs off 27 balls. David Beddingham didn’t last long either; despite getting a reprieve from Sadman, he was caught by wicketkeeper Liton Das after scoring 11 runs off Taijul’s turner.
De Zorzi was playing well but was dismissed just one run before the team reached a hundred, as Taijul’s turn led to him being caught by Mahmudul Hasan Joy at short leg, after scoring 30 runs off 72 balls with four fours.
In the same over, Taijul also dismissed Matthew Britzke, whose attempt to leave the ball led to his stumps being broken. This wicket marked Taijul’s 200th in Test cricket, a milestone previously achieved by Shakib Al Hasan.
Taijul quickly completed his five-wicket haul by getting Ryan Rickelton caught by Liton at a total of 108 runs. The ball skidded after hitting a crack in the pitch, and Rickelton, attempting a cut, scored 27 runs off 49 balls with four fours.
Following this, Wiaan Mulder, along with Kyle Verreynne, steadied the South African innings, ending the day with a 32-run partnership. Verreynne scored 18 runs and Mulder 17 runs.
For Bangladesh, Taijul took five wickets for 49 runs, while the only other wicket went to pacer Hasan Mahmud.
Before this, Bangladesh’s batting crumbled for just 106 runs after winning the toss. Mahmudul Hasan was the only batter to offer resistance, scoring the highest with 30 runs off 97 balls. Other batsmen who reached double digits included Mushfiqur Rahim (11), Mehedi Hasan Miraz (13), and Taijul (16).
In the morning, Mulder took three wickets for just 22 runs, and Bangladesh struggled under Kagiso Rabada’s bowling. Keshav Maharaj also took three wickets for 34 runs.
